Upcoming Races

With the Giro Rosa (and some men’s race going on in France in the run-up to La Course), it’s easy to forget how much superb women’s cycling goes on here at home, too. There aren’t quite so many events over the next couple of weeks as normal, but chances are there’s something not too far from you. Go along and show your support – you’ll be amazed how much the riders appreciate it!

Essex Giro (British Cycling Women’s Road Series)
Cancelled: very sad news, in the opinion of Neutral Service, because this was a race that had it only have been given the sort of promotion it deserved might well have become one of the biggest and best on the calendar. The 2014 edition had everything – a selection of top riders, another selection of riders more than capable of taking them on and winning on a good day, an interesting circuit, a tough climb to the finish, beautiful scenery and even a few floods, just for good measure. The reason for the cancellation is British Cycling’s decision to demand the event doubled the number of marshals on the parcours (and must have good reason to do so), which the organisers cannot provide. Fingers crossed it’ll be back next year.

Going to one of these events, either to race or as a spectator/volunteer/official? Want to write a report and/or submit some snaps to help spread awareness and enjoyment of women’s cycling? We’d like to hear from you!

Nikki Juniper’s already won the RR Series, but the final round will still be interesting

Ryedale Women’s GP & National Junior Women’s RR Championship
E/1/2/3, 63km
Ampleforth Abbey and College, St Alban’s Centre, Ampleforth, York, North Yorkshire, YO62 4HA
A great race (like all the rest in the Series), albeit one that could benefit enormously from an extra lap around the long circuit to bring it up to a decent length (like the men’s race, which is 150km). Nevertheless, well worth a visit – the local landscape is spectacular, the parcours is fantastic and it also forms the Junior National RR Championships.

With only 30 points left to be won, Nikki Juniper (Giordana-Triton) has already won overall after her victory at the Series’ penultimate round (since the cancellation of the Essex Giro, see above) the Stafford GP – which gave her an advantage of 38 points to Charline Joiner of WNT, who has 103. Joiner’s second place is also guaranteed as her advantage over third place Annasley Park (Giordana-Triton) is 33 points, but there are nine riders below Annasley who, with a win, could leapfrog her – and they’re all very strong rivals indeed, including Dani King (Wiggle-Honda) and Pearl Izumi-Sports Tours International duo Ciara Horne and Sarah Storey.

So, competition will be fierce… and anyway, Nikki’s not the sort of rider who’ll take things easy sitting on the back of the bunch, secure in the knowledge that the title’s in the bag!

Radeon Cycle Coaching Sherston Road Race
Cats. 2/3/4, 68km
Sherston Village Hall, High Street, Sherston, Wiltshire, SN16 0LQ
Always good to see a Cat. 2/3/4 race over a decent distance (5km longer than the E/1/2/3 National Series round taking place a week earlier – see above). Thanks to the rolling chalk hills of Wiltshire it should be a good route, too.
